NCAAB: Top 25 roundup: No. 6 Purdue outscores No. 18 North Carolina in tourney

Sasha Stefanovic’s 23 points and Jaden Ivey’s 22 carried No. 6 Purdue past No. 18 North Carolina 93-84 Saturday in a game with some rapid scoring spurts for both teams in the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament in Uncasville, Conn.

Trevion Williams shot 8-for-10 from the field and had 20 points off the bench for Purdue (4-0).

The Boilermakers will meet No. 5 Villanova in Sunday’s title game, followed by North Carolina against No. 17 Tennessee in the consolation game. Villanova topped Tennessee 71-53 in Saturday’s first game.

North Carolina (3-1) received 26 points from Dawson Garcia, but the outcome resulted in the first loss for first-year coach Hubert Davis. RJ Davis and Caleb Love both scored 18 points for the Tar Heels, who made 12 shots from 3-point range.

No. 5 Villanova 71, No. 17 Tennessee 53

Jermaine Samuels had 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Collin Gillespie added 14 points as the Wildcats defeated the Volunteers in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic at Uncasville, Conn.

The Wildcats (3-1) will play No. 6 Purdue, a 93-84 winner against No. 18 North Carolina, in the title game on Sunday. Brandon Slater also had 14 points for Villanova, which has won two straight since an 86-77 overtime loss at No. 2 UCLA. Justin Moore contributed 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Santiago Vescovi led Tennessee (2-1) with a career-high tying 23 points. The Volunteers shot just 5 of 28 (17.9 percent) from 3-point range to go along with 18 turnovers.

No. 8 Texas 79, San Jose State 45

Timmy Allen scored 17 points in 24 minutes as the Longhorns dominated early on and crushed visiting San Jose State in Austin, Texas, as part of the Abe Lemons Classic.

The Longhorns led by 18 points eight minutes into the game, by 30 at halftime and by 34 points with 7:54 left, waltzing to a win that was even easier than the statistics depict.

Tre Mitchell added 14 points for the Longhorns (3-1), with Andrew Jones hitting for 13 and Brock Cunningham scoring a career-high 10 points. Tibet Gorener led the Spartans (1-3) with 12 points, while Josh O’Garro added 11. San Jose State has lost three straight games.

No. 9 Baylor 86, Stanford 48

The Bears opened the second half with a 26-3 flurry that buried the visiting Cardinal in a nonconference victory in Waco, Texas.

LJ Cryer had a game-high 21 points and Kendall Brown added 15 for Baylor (4-0), which has enjoyed a 34.8-point average margin of victory in its four games this season.

Spencer Jones and Jaiden Delaire had 10 points apiece to pace Stanford (3-2), which was facing a Top 10 team for the first time since losing 72-56 at home to fifth-ranked Kansas in December 2019.

No. 23 UConn 87, Binghamton 63

Tyrese Martin collected 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Huskies over the Bearcats in Hartford, Conn.

Adama Sanogo scored 12 points for the Huskies (4-0), who shot 49.3 percent from the floor and 46.7 percent from 3-point range. The victory marked the best start in four years under head coach Dan Hurley.

Tyler Bertram had 15 points and Ogheneyole Akuwovo added 12 to pace Binghamton (1-3), which has lost two in a row. Bertram had a career-high 29 points in the Bearcats’ 85-77 victory over Columbia on Wednesday night.
