Dallion Johnson sank the tiebreaking 3-pointer with 1:12 remaining as host Florida Gulf Coast knocked off No. 7 Florida Atlantic 72-68 on Saturday night in Fort Myers, Fla.
The Eagles (6-9) hosted a Top 10 team for the first time in school history and led most of the way. They allowed the Owls to tie the score twice in the final 4:46 before Johnson sank the clutch trey from the left side over Jalen Gaffney after a timeout.
After Johnson’s triple, Florida Atlantic (10-3) got two offensive rebounds on its next trip and Johnell Davis missed a 3-pointer with 44 seconds left. Franco Miller Jr. hit one of two free throws with 16 seconds left, but Florida Gulf Coast got the offensive rebound.
After a traveling violation by the Eagles’ Rahmir Barno with 13 seconds left, Alijah Martin missed a trey for the Owls and Miller secured the defensive rebound with five seconds left.
No. 2 Kansas 86, Wichita State 67
Hunter Dickinson had another double-double for the Jayhawks, who cruised past the Shockers in a neutral-site game at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.
Dickinson finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds for his eighth double-double in 13 games this season. Kansas (12-1) extended its winning streak to eight games. Kevin McCullar Jr. added 20 points.
Wichita State (8-5), which lost on this court to another in-state rival, Kansas State, 69-60 nine days ago, was led by Dalen Ridgnal with 13 points. Xavier Bell added 11 points and Quincy Ballard had 10.
No. 3 Houston 81, Penn 42
L.J. Cryer surpassed 1,000 career points while freshman forward Joseph Tugler posted a career-high 13 points as the host Cougars completed an unbeaten nonconference slate by walloping the Quakers.
Cryer, a Baylor transfer who needed eight points to reach the milestone, scored 12 of his 16 points in the first half. Tugler added seven rebounds after starting in place of J’Wan Roberts, who aggravated a knee injury last week against Texas State.
Jamal Shead had 14 points and four assists for the Cougars, who will host West Virginia in their Big 12 opener on Jan. 6. Befitting its reputation, Houston (13-0) dominated with defense. Tyler Perkins led the Quakers (8-6) with 10 points. Penn finished with 22 turnovers and shot 31.1 percent from the field.
No. 10 Marquette 72, No. 22 Creighton 67
Sean Jones and Tyler Kolek each scored 15 points and Kolek dished eight assists to lead the Golden Eagles past the visiting Bluejays in their Big East matchup in Milwaukee.
Kam Jones also dropped 12 for Marquette (11-3, 2-1 Big East). Oso Ighodaro scored seven while grabbing a game-high 16 boards.
Creighton (9-4, 0-2) was led by Baylor Scheierman with 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting along with his eight boards. Trey Alexander added 18 points and six assists.
No. 14 BYU 94, Wyoming 68
Trevin Knell and Noah Waterman scored 17 points apiece and shot a combined 8 of 15 on 3-point attempts as the Cougars blew away the Cowboys in a nonconference matchup at Provo, Utah.
BYU (12-1) won its fourth straight game going into its Big 12 opener vs. fellow conference newcomer Cincinnati on Jan. 6. Atiki Ally Atiki finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Sam Griffin scored 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting to lead Wyoming (7-6), which begins its Mountain West campaign on Tuesday against San Jose State.
No. 16 Duke 106, Queens 69
Jared McCain scored a season-high 24 points and the Blue Devils rolled past the visiting Royals in Durham, N.C.
Kyle Filipowski provided 19 points and five blocks, and Caleb Foster had 13 points for Duke (9-3), which played its final nonconference game and returns to Atlantic Coast Conference play Tuesday at home vs. Syracuse.
Blue Devils guard Tyrese Proctor, who had been out for four weeks with an ankle injury, came off the bench and had nine points to go with four assists.
Deyton Albury’s 23 points and Jaxon Pollard’s 10 points were tops for Queens (6-9), which was blown out by an ACC team for the second game in a row after a loss at Clemson.
No. 19 Memphis 81, Austin Peay 70
David Jones scored 19 points and the host Tigers struggled at times before subduing the Governors in the nonconference finale for both teams.
Nae’Qwan Tomlin had 15 points and Nick Jourdain netted 12 for the Tigers (11-2), who pushed their winning streak to six games.
Dezi Jones had 20 points, nine rebounds and five assists for Austin Peay (7-8), which was denied what could have been its second-ever victory against a Top 25 team. Dez White added 11 points.
No. 20 James Madison 82, Texas State 65
T.J. Bickerstaff had 21 points and 10 rebounds as the Dukes pulled away in the second half for the Sun Belt Conference victory over the Bobcats in Harrisonburg, Va.
Terrence Edwards Jr. added 17 points and five rebounds as the Dukes (13-0, 1-0 Sun Belt) established a program record with their 13th straight win and remained one of three unbeaten teams in Division I. The Dukes had just five turnovers to 14 for the Bobcats.
Coleton Benson scored all 19 of his points in the final 10 minutes for Texas State (6-7, 0-1), and Kaden Gumbs tallied 14 points and five rebounds.
