Yanic Konan Niederhauser had 18 points and nine rebounds to help lead Penn State to a 103-54 win over UMBC at University Park, Pa., on Friday.
D’Marco Dunn scored 16 points, Zach Hicks and Jahvin Carter each had 12 points and Nick Kern Jr. added 10 points for Penn State (2-0), which reached 100 points scored for the second straight game to start the season after scoring 108 in a season-opening win over Binghamton.
Penn State shot 55.2 percent from the field, and 43.5 percent from 3-point range (10 of 23), held a 50-35 rebounding advantage and forced 17 UMBC turnovers.
The Nittany Lions also had 12 steals and blocked eight shots.
Bryce Johnson scored 13 points and Marcus Banks Jr. added 11 points for UMBC (1-1), which shot just 29.2 percent from the field overall and 8 of 24 (33.3 percent) from the 3-point line.
Leading 43-28 at halftime, Penn State started the second half on a 7-0 run to take a 50-28 lead with 17:40 remaining in the game following a layup by Puff Johnson.
The Nittany Lions continued to grow their lead, going up by 30 at 66-36 with 12:08 left after a 3-pointer by Dunn.
Penn State took an 89-48 lead with 5:40 left and then reached the 100-point mark with 2:02 remaining on a. 3-pointer by Carter, which also gave the Nittany Lions a 50-point lead at 101-51.
Penn State took a big lead early, jumping out to a 17-4 lead with 13:26 remaining in the first half.
UMBC responded with a 14-7 run to cut its deficit to 24-18 with 8:35 left until halftime. Later in the half, Penn State went on an 8-2 surge to take a 43-26 lead with 52 seconds to go in the first half.
