Izaiah Brockington scored a game-high 20 points — including the go-ahead bucket in the final minutes — leading Iowa State to a 54-51 win over the TCU in a Big 12 game on Tuesday in Fort Worth, Texas.
A corner 3-pointer by Brockington gave Iowa State a 50-49 advantage with 3:40 left, and the Cyclones (17-9, 4-9 Big 12) never trailed again.
Tyrese Hunter added 15 points for the Cyclones.
The Horned Frogs (16-7, 5-6) were led by Eddie Lampkin, who had 16 points and nine rebounds. Emanuel Miller added 14 points for TCU.
Iowa State snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 3-5 on the road.
TCU fell to 9-4 at home and lost for the third time in four games overall.
The Horned Frogs had beaten the Cyclones eight of the past nine meetings, including the past three in a row, before Tuesday’s narrow loss.
TCU led 24-22 at halftime as neither team shot better than 31 percent from the floor.
In the second half, Lampkin took over with eight straight TCU points, all of them in the paint. His slam put TCU up 49-47 with 4:01 left.
However, Brockington’s shot gave Iowa State the lead. Then, with 2:13 left, a mid-range jumper by Gabe Kalscheur gave Iowa State a 52-49 lead, and the play withstood a review as the officials ruled that he got it off just before the shot clock expired.
TCU cut its deficit to 52-51 on a Baugh bucket with 1:52 remaining.
A miss by Brockington gave TCU a chance to take the lead. However, the Frogs missed a pair of shots on their next possession — by Francisco Farabello and Damion Baugh.
Forced to foul, TCU put Caleb Grill on the line, and Grill missed a one-and-one free throw with 17 seconds left.
After a timeout, the Horned Frogs’ Chuck O’Bannon Jr. hit nothing but air on a 3-point try from the left wing, and two free throws by Iowa State’s Aljaz Kunc provided the final margin.
TCU’s Mike Miles missed a 70-foot desperation heave at the buzzer to end the game.
