High Point dismissed G.G. Smith as coach on Friday after one full season on the job.

Smith, 46, is the son of school legend Tubby Smith, who coached High Point for nearly four seasons until stepping down late in the 2021-22 season.

High Point went 14-17 and 6-12 in Big South play this season. The season ended with a 72-70 loss to Charleston Southern in the first round of the Big South tournament on Wednesday.

G.G. Smith went 3-3 while finishing last season in place of his father. He initially joined the staff as an assistant in May 2018.

The school said the parting was mutual.

“I would like to thank G.G. Smith for his leadership and commitment to our men’s basketball program and the High Point community over the last five years,” High Point athletic director Dan Hauser said in a news release.

Overall, G.G. Smith has a 73-118 record in six-plus seasons as a head coach.

He went 56-98 in five seasons at Loyola (Md.) from 2013-18 in his previous head-coaching stint.

Tubby Smith played for High Point from 1969-73 and was inducted into the High Point Athletic Hall of Fame in 2016. He also is a member of the Kentucky and Tulsa athletic halls of fame.

Tubby Smith is best known for winning the 1998 national title at Kentucky.
