Guard Silas Demary Jr., a two-year starter at Georgia, announced Thursday that he is transferring to UConn.

The 6-foot-5 Demary averaged 13.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.7 steals in 33 games for the Bulldogs this season.

Demary was one of the top guards in the transfer portal. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.

“Silas is the type of big guard we love at UConn and we can’t wait to get him in the mix,” Huskies coach Dan Hurley said in a news release. “He can score from all three levels, play-make and use his length to guard multiple positions. Silas comes from a great family and will fit our championship culture to a tee.”

Demary improved his 3-point shooting accuracy from 30.3 percent as a freshman to 37.4 percent as a sophomore. He also has 108 steals in 70 college games.

Demary placed a video on his social media accounts detailing his visit to UConn and the decision. He told reporters Thursday that the school’s legacy appealed to him.

“I wanted to be the next great point guard,” Demary told reporters on a conference call. “Obviously, guys that won back-to-back, great guards like Tristen Newton, Stephon Castle, you look back even farther — Shabazz Napier, Kemba Walker. I want to be a part of one of those names. I want to be part of a program that’s been about winning.”

UConn won consecutive national championships before being sent home by Florida in the second round of this year’s tournament.

Demary also visited St. John’s during his decision-making process.
