The spectacular rookie campaign of Victor Wembanyama has come to a close, as the San Antonio Spurs announced Saturday that their superstar and rookie-of-the-year candidate won’t play in Sunday’s season finale against the Detroit Pistons.

San Antonio elected to rest Wembanyama and his right ankle, the same move the Spurs made Wednesday when they sat him during their 127-89 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Spurs are 2-8 without Wembanyama this season.

The move comes one day after San Antonio upset the Denver Nuggets 121-120 with Wembanyama in the lineup. In that game, he finished with 34 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and two blocks.

The No. 1 overall selection in the 2023 NBA Draft, Wembanyama has averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.2 steals and a league-leading 3.6 blocks in 71 games.
