Phoenix Suns general manager James Jones signed a multi-year contract extension on Tuesday.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Jones, 41, was named the winner of the 2021 NBA Executive of the Year Award.

“We’re fortunate to have a great basketball mind leading this team. James not only has tremendous instinct for identifying talent, but he has an innate ability to compose a roster that is deep with complementary players who make each other better, on and off the court,” Suns managing partner Robert Sarver said in a release. “He came in with strongly-held beliefs on what it would take to nurture a championship culture and what it should mean to wear a Suns jersey. We promised fans an elite NBA franchise that would steal their hearts and make them proud and that’s what we have built under James’ leadership.”

The Suns have the best record in the NBA at 37-9 and are on a seven-game winning streak heading into a game Wednesday at Utah. Phoenix also has won 10 of its last 11 games.

Jones played 14 seasons in the NBA for the Indiana Pacers, Suns, Portland Trail Blazers, Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers before joining the Suns’ front office. He was first the vice president of basketball operations, then moved into the general manager position on an interim basis in 2018 before the interim title was lifted in 2019.

Jones hired Monty Williams, who was named the National Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year last season. Jones also acquired and re-signed All-Star guard Chris Paul, while constructing a roster that reached the NBA Finals in 2021.

“It’s a privilege to support our Suns and Mercury players, staff, employees and our fans,” Jones said. “The Valley is a special place and I’m excited for the future.”
