St. Louis City signed defender Michael Wentzel to a one-year contract Wednesday with options for 2025 and 2026.

Wentzel, 22, arrives from MLS NEXT Pro affiliate St. Louis City 2, where he served as captain and helped the club post five clean sheets through 14 matches.

“Michael has proven his quality when called upon so we are happy to promote him to the first team,” sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel said in a release. “His aggressive defending and knowledge of our style of play made this a seamless transition for him.”

Wentzel has made two MLS starts with St. Louis on short-term loan agreements this season, including a 1-1 draw with Atlanta United on June 22.
