The New York Red Bulls transferred Bento Estrela to Portugal’s Sporting Lisbon for an undisclosed fee Wednesday.

The homegrown midfielder has not appeared in an MLS match. The 18-year-old made 29 starts over the past two seasons with the MLS NEXT Pro affiliate Red Bulls II.

In February of 2021, the Portuguese international made headlines by turning pro at 14 years and 364 days old, which was the fourth-youngest signing in MLS history at the time.

“We wish Bento all the luck in the world moving forward in the next chapter of his career,” NYRB head of sport Jochen Schneider said.

New York retained a sell-on fee in the event of a transfer of Estrela to another club.
