MLS: Red Bulls’ Lewis Morgan wins MLS comeback award

New York Red Bulls midfielder Lewis Morgan won the 2024 MLS Comeback Player of the Year on Wednesday.

The Scottish international, 28, missed 28 matches and played in just five in 2023 because of hip injuries and underwent hip surgery. According to MLS.com, he was given a 25 percent chance or less of playing at a peak level again.

But in 2024, he had 13 goals and seven assists in 29 contests, leading the club in goals and finishing second in assists. His contributions to 20 goals were the most by a Red Bulls player since 2018.

He is the first player in franchise history to win the award and the first Red Bulls player to win an MLS Year-End Award since 2018, when Aaron Long was named MLS Defender of the Year.

Morgan made five caps this year for Scotland after a six-year absence from national team play.

Minnesota United’s Robin Lod was second in voting, followed by Maxi Moralez of the New York City FC.
