Real Salt Lake re-signed midfielder Everton Luiz for the 2022 season, the club announced Saturday.

The 33-year-old Brazilian has started 54 of his 66 matches with RSL since 2019, registering three assists.

“We are very excited to bring Everton back to RSL for his fourth season in Utah,” general manager Elliot Fall said in a news release. “His tenaciousness and steady presence in the midfield protects our back four and connects our build-up, while his experience with this club, in this league, and through his career amplifies his value to our locker room.

“Everton’s arrival at this stage of preseason gives our coaching staff options, and we welcome the depth and flexibility he provides.”

Luiz joined Real Salt Lake on loan from Italy’s SPAL in 2019. He also played professionally in Europe with Serbia’s Partizan (2016-18) and with the Swiss clubs St. Gallen (2014-16) and Lugano (2013-14).

Real Salt Lake open the MLS season on the road against the Houston Dynamo on Feb. 27.
