Omir Fernandez scored on a penalty kick in the 31st minute, and the New York Red Bulls held on for a 1-0 win over New York City FC on Thursday in a Leagues Cup round-of-32 match at Harrison, N.J.
Luquinhas was fouled by James Sands inside the 18-yard box, and Fernandez drove the ensuing penalty kick into the top right corner.
The Red Bulls advance to a round-of-16 matchup against the Philadelphia Union on Monday in Chester.
The Leagues Cup began with every team from Major League Soccer and Mexico’s Liga MX competing. The group stage narrowed the field to 32 for the start of the single-elimination knockout rounds, which began on Wednesday. The final is scheduled for Aug. 19.
The two Leagues Cup finalists and the third-place teams all earn berths into the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Union 0, D.C. United 0 (Philadelphia wins 5-4 on penalty kicks)
Following a scoreless draw in Chester, Pa., Philadelphia advanced when Olivier Mbaizo slotted home his attempt in the sixth round of a penalty shootout.
D.C.’s Pedro Santos hit the right post with his shot to open the sixth round.
The Union’s Daniel Gazdag had his penalty kick saved by Alex Bono in the first round, and D.C. United’s Chris Durkin had his try in the fourth round sail over the crossbar.
Revolution 2, Atlas 2 (New England wins 8-7 on penalty kicks)
Gustavo Bou scored two goals as New England rallied from a 2-0 deficit and defeated Atlas in a penalty-kick shootout at Foxborough, Mass.
Goals by Mateo Garcia in the eighth minute and Jordy Caicedo in the 11h gave the visitors an early lead, but Bou responded in the 30th and 79th minutes.
The tying goal came off a missed penalty kick. Atlas goalie Camilo Vargas dived to his left to stop Bou’s soft effort, but the rebound went right back to Bou, who tapped the ball into the net.
New England moves on to host Queretaro on Monday.
Queretaro 1, Pumas UNAM 0
Angel Sepulveda’s 74th-minute goal stood up as the winner as Queretaro edged Pumas in an all-Liga MX matchup at Washington.
Pumas had an opportunity to pull level four minutes after conceding, but Queretaro goalie Fernando Tapia saved Eduardo Salvio’s penalty kick.
Pumas fell despite having a 24-10 edge in shots, a 6-4 advantage in shots on target and possessing the ball for 65 percent of the action.
Charlotte FC 0, Cruz Azul 0 (Charlotte wins 4-3 on penalty kicks)
Playing a “home” match at Frisco, Texas, Charlotte escaped with a penalty-shootout victory over Cruz Azul following a scoreless draw.
The tiebreaker featured five misses in six rounds. The match ended when Charlotte goalie Kristijan Kahlina stopped Kevin Castano’s attempt.
Ben Bender, Derrick Jones, Kerwin Vargas and Andrew Privett were successful in the shootout for Charlotte. Ignacio Rivero, Jesus Duenas and Carlos Rodriguez found the net with their penalty kicks for Cruz Azul.
Charlotte advances to a road match against the Houston Dynamo on Monday.

The scheduled match between Leon and Real Salt Lake at Sandy, Utah, was postponed due to a lightning storm. The teams will face off Friday night.
