An unprecedented weather system, that has spawned blizzard warnings in the mountains near Los Angeles, led to the postponement of Saturday’s season-opening game between the Los Angeles Galaxy and Los Angeles FC at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif..

An MLS regular-season record crowd of over 75,000 was expected at the storied college-football venue for the latest installment of the rivalry that has been dubbed “El Trafico.”

According to weather.com, the weather forecast for Saturday’s game called for temperatures in the low 40s with light winds and rain. Hail storms with lightning have hit parts of the Los Angeles area since Wednesday night. Lightning and localized flooding was a concern Saturday.

No makeup date for the game has been announced, with the league saying tickets for Saturday’s game will be honored for the rescheduled contest.

The season opener was set to mark the Galaxy’s one-game return to the Rose Bowl, where they played their first six seasons. The contest was also going to be the first for LAFC since winning last season’s MLS Cup with a victory in penalty kicks against the Philadelphia Union.
