The Houston Dynamo signed two-time MLS champion Nico Lodeiro to a one-year contract with a club option for 2026 on Wednesday.

The move comes one day after Orlando City and the 35-year-old Lodeiro mutually agreed to terminate his contract for this season.

“Nico is one of the great competitors in the history of MLS, who inspires others with his relentless work ethic, dedication to his teammates and will to win,” Dynamo president of soccer Pat Onstad said in a news release. “We are proud that he wants to be part of our project in Houston and look forward to his contributions on and off the field in our 20th MLS season.”

Lodeiro had one goal and 11 assists in 34 MLS matches (16 starts) last year in his lone season with Orlando City.

Before joining Orlando City as a free agent, Lodeiro was a top-notch attacking midfielder for the Seattle Sounders for eight seasons (2016-23). He helped Seattle win the MLS Cup in 2016 and 2019 and the CONCACAF Champions League title in 2022.

Lodeiro had 41 goals and 80 assists in 191 regular-season matches (179 starts) for Seattle, including career bests of eight goals and 16 assists in 2018. He recorded eight goals and 11 assists in 26 playoff matches (21 starts) for the Sounders.

Lodeiro was scoreless in five playoff matches off the bench for Orlando City last season.

Lodeiro earned MLS Best XI honors in 2018, 2020 and 2022. He was a finalist for the 2020 MVP award and won the league’s Top Newcomer Award in 2016.

Lodeiro also has appeared in two World Cups (2010, 2014) for his native Uruguay.
