The San Jose Earthquakes acquired defender Dave Romney and midfielders Mark-Anthony Kaye and Ian Harkes from the New England Revolution in exchange for $500,000 in general allocation money and an international roster slot on Monday.

The Earthquakes, who finished with a league-low 21 points in 34 matches last season, are starting over with new coach and sporting director Bruce Arena, whose most recent stop was with New England.

Arena brought in a trio of Revolution players he is familiar with. The GAM the Earthquakes gave up in the deal will be split up between the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

“We’re pleased to be able to add three quality players to our roster,” Arena said in a statement. “Dave is a proven defender who has excelled in this league, while Ian and Mark-Anthony will provide versatility and valuable experience to our midfield.”

Romney, 31, joins his fourth MLS club after stops with the Los Angeles Galaxy (2015-19), Nashville SC (2020-22) and New England. He did not have a goal or an assist in 27 matches (24 starts) last year but has tallied eight goals and 14 helpers in 232 games (213 starts) in his MLS career.

Kaye, 30, is coming off a difficult season in which he also failed to find the scoresheet in 21 matches (15 starts). Now coming to his fifth MLS team, Kaye has amassed 15 goals and 26 assists in 169 career appearances (153 starts) for Los Angeles FC (2018-21), the Colorado Rapids (2021-22), Toronto FC (2022-23) and the Revolution (2023-24).

Harkes, 29, posted one goal and four assists in 27 matches (17 starts) for the Revolution in 2024. The Englishman spent time with Scotland’s Dundee United from 2019-23 and has recorded five goals and six assists in 69 MLS matches (50 starts) with D.C. United (2017-18) and New England.
