New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes landed on the 15-day injured list with an elbow flexor strain Wednesday, the same day he was scheduled to start a potential American League East-clinching game against the Baltimore Orioles.
The move is retroactive to Sunday for Cortes, who pitched well in his past three appearances. He went 1-0 in that span, giving up one run on seven hits and seven walks and striking out 18 in 15 1/3 innings.
Right-hander Marcus Stroman (10-8, 4.04 ERA) will get the start for the Yankees in Cortes’ place.
Cortes, 29, is 9-10 with a 3.77 ERA across a team-high 174 1/3 innings. He has appeared in 31 games (30 starts) on the season.
The Yankees recalled right-hander Cody Poteet from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to replace Cortes on the active roster.
