New York Yankees left-handed pitcher Anthony Misiewicz was carted off the field after taking a line drive off his head Friday against the host Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Yankees reported that Misiewicz was alert but taken to a hospital for further evaluation and testing.
New York manager Aaron Boone said postgame, “All I know is he left here in good spirits and felt he was in a good spot. But just hoping and praying for the best as far as results.”
In the sixth, his first inning of relief, Misiewicz got hit by a shot off the bat of Ji Hwan Bae with two outs, what turned out to be a game-tying single.
Misiewicz remained on all fours for a few minutes, but eventually was helped to his feet and into a cart. The score was 3-3 as he exited, and the Yankees went on to win 7-5.
Bae said postgame, per MLB.com, “I saw the ball going through to him and I saw his face, too, so I got a little bit of shock. I was just feeling really sorry about it. It was an accident. Nothing we can do. Just praying.”
Misiewicz was making his third appearance for the Yankees this season. He played for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Detroit Tigers earlier in the year.
Bae’s ninth-inning throwing error on a potential game-ending double play gave New York the lead.
