The New York Yankees on Monday announced the hiring of former crosstown manager Luis Rojas as their new third base coach.
Rojas was fired last month after two seasons as manager of the New York Mets. He went 103-119, including the COVID-shortened season of 2020. He spent 16 years total in the Mets’ organization.
Rojas was the sixth Dominican-born manager in Major League history. His father, Felipe Alou, was the first when he managed the Montreal Expos (1992-2001) and San Francisco Giants (2003-06).
Rojas, 40, replaces Phil Nevin at third, one of three coaches let go by the Yankees in October.
The Yankees also parted ways with hitting coach Marcus Thames and assistant hitting coach P.J. Pilittere. A fourth, first base coach and outfield instructor Reggie Willits, left to become a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Oklahoma.
