Luis Severino allowed a second-inning single to Miguel Cabrera and two baserunners in seven stellar innings and combined with two relievers on a one-hitter hitter to continue a standout run of starting pitching for the New York Yankees, who extended their winning streak to five games with a 3-0 victory over the visiting Detroit Tigers on Saturday afternoon.
Severino (4-1) allowed only a single to Cabrera to start the second after teammates Jameson Taillon and Gerrit Cole took perfect game bids deep into their respective starts. Taillon retired the first 21 hitters in the second game of Thursday’s doubleheader against the Los Angeles Angels and Cole retired the first 20 in Friday’s 13-0 win.
Severino struck out 10 for his 11th career double-digit strikeout game and first since also fanning 10 against Detroit on Aug. 31, 2018.
His outing marked the ninth straight time a New York starter completed at least six innings. It also marked the MLB-best 13th time a Yankee starter completed at least seven innings.
Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo hit solo shots to back Severino (4-1) as the Yankees won for the ninth time in 11 games since their only three-game skid May 22-23. Josh Donaldson lifted a sacrifice fly to account for New York’s other run.
The only other Tiger to reach against Severino was Derek Hill. Hill drew a one-out walk in the third but was forced out on a grounder by Willi Castro.
Castro was thrown out trying to steal second during an at-bat to Jonathan Schoop — who ended Cole’s perfect game bid Friday.
Severino finished off his outing by retiring the final 13 hitters, including two strikeouts on Cabrera after allowing the slugger’s 3,033rd career hit.
Michael King followed Severino by quickly tossing a perfect eighth. Clay Holmes pitched the ninth for his eighth save.
Detroit was dominated for the second straight game by Yankee pitching after taking four of five from first-place Minnesota.
Detroit rookie Beau Brieske (0-5) matched his longest career outing by allowing two runs and three hits in six innings. He struck out seven and walked one in an 83-pitch outing.
Judge increased his major league-best homer count to 21 when he hammered a 95-mph fastball to right center field. Rizzo’s 13th homer of the season made it 2-0 in the sixth.
Cabrera ensured the Yankees would not take a perfect game bid deep into the contest for the third straight game when his sharp liner caromed off the top edge of shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa’s glove and into left field.
