An MRI on New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman’s Achilles tendon came back negative but the left-hander could still be headed to the injured list.

“I think the IL is still very much in play,” manager Aaron Boone said Monday after updating the results of Sunday’s MRI. “I just think we don’t want to rush into it. … We’ll kind of see what we got.”

Chapman surrendered a tiebreaking homer to AJ Pollock in the ninth inning of a 3-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox in the opening game of Sunday’s home doubleheader.

The 34-year-old left-hander has allowed runs in each of his last five outings. Chapman is 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA and nine saves in 17 appearances.

A seven-time All-Star, Chapman has a 40-33 career record with 315 saves and a 2.39 ERA over 641 games with the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs and Yankees.

The Yankees also placed third baseman Josh Donaldson on the COVID-19 list, where he joined catcher Kyle Higashioka and outfielder Joey Gallo. Infielder/outfielder Miguel Andujar was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move.

Boone said the three players on the COVID list are symptomatic.

“They feel sick. It’s not just allergies,” Boone said. “They’re not available to play.”
