The Detroit Tigers placed third baseman Gio Urshela on the 10-day injured list Saturday due to a right hamstring strain.
In a corresponding move, Detroit recalled third baseman Buddy Kennedy from Triple-A Toledo.
Urshela, 32, exited the Tigers’ 5-4 win at Minnesota on Friday in the second inning after running out a groundout and hobbling off the field. He later told reporters that he has a Grade 1 strain and could be out for two weeks.
“It didn’t look good,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Friday. “I thought he was running a little bit funny down to first, and then when he got to first and then bent over, I had a little pit in my stomach. He’s going to get evaluated. … I’m never really optimistic on those type of injuries with his hammy, but we hope for the best.”
Urshela came to Detroit as a free agent in the offseason and is batting .298 with six RBIs in 18 games. He missed most of the 2023 season with the Los Angeles Angels because of a fractured pelvis.
The native of Colombia has played for the Cleveland franchise (2015, 2017), Toronto Blue Jays (2018), New York Yankees (2019-21), Minnesota Twins (2022), Angels (2023) and Tigers. Urshela is a career .278 hitter with 64 home runs and 286 RBIs in 682 games.
Kennedy, 25, hit .206 (22-for-107) in 40 games for the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2022-23.
