Javier Rivas hit a walk-off solo home run to complete a three-run uprising and hand the Pittsburgh Pirates a 3-2 win over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies in spring-training action on Tuesday in Bradenton, Fla.
Scoreless through eight, the Pirates got on the board with a pair of RBI sacrifice flies by Nick Yorke and Bryce Johnson before Phillies reliever Josh Hejka (0-1) replaced Devin Sweet and Rivas blasted the game-winner to left center.
Joey Bart and Adam Frazier finished with two hits apiece for Pittsburgh. Wilkin Ramos (1-0) pitched the eighth and ninth innings and fanned two without a hit.
Nick Castellanos drove in the Phillies’ runs on a solo shot in the first and an infield single in the sixth. Starter Cristopher Sanchez lasted five innings, with two strikeouts and four hits.
Tigers 6, Twins 5
Detroit scored three in the top of the ninth and dug out of a 5-0 hole to beat host Minnesota in Fort Myers, Fla.
Thayron Liranzo worked an 11-pitch walk to load the bases in the top of the ninth against Jhoan Duran (0-1) and, after a pitching change, Ben Malgeri pushed across one run with a walk. Brady Allen’s grounder was booted to score two runners.
Justyn-Henry Malloy hit a two-run single to get the Tigers’ offense going, and reliever Troy Watson (1-0) threw a hitless eighth for the win. Edouard Julien had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs to lead the Twins’ offense.
Red Sox 4, Yankees 4
Anthony Volpe hit two RBI singles for New York as it drew with visiting Boston in Tampa, Fla.
Volpe’s second single scored an additional runner thanks to a fielding error in center by Trayce Thompson, which made it 4-2 Yankees. Roman Anthony poked a run-scoring single in the seventh and Rob Refsnyder tied the game with a sac fly in the eighth.
Masataka Yoshida hit a two-run homer for the Red Sox while Walker Buehler worked five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits, fanning four. Max Fried threw 4 1/3 scoreless frames with two hits and struck out three for the Yankees.
Marlins 4, Cardinals 4
Connor Caskenette’s pinch-hit RBI single tied the game in the top of the ninth as Miami finished all square with host St. Louis in Jupiter, Fla.
Nick Fortes had an RBI double and Xavier Edwards added a run-scoring single for the Marlins. Starter Connor Gillispie went four innings and yielded one run on two hits and two walks.
The Cardinals turned a two-run deficit into a 4-3 lead with an RBI groundout followed by Pedro Pages’ and Jose Fermin’s back-to-back homers. Miles Mikolas tossed six innings and allowed three runs on six hits and two walks, striking out four.
Reds 1, Angels 0
Nick Martinez fired four innings of one-hit ball and struck out six as host Cincinnati blanked Los Angeles in Goodyear, Ariz.
Martinez (1-1) walked three. The Reds scored the game’s lone run in the third when Matt McLain drove in Blake Dunn with a two-out single. McLain finished 2-for-3 and Gavin Lux also stroked two hits for Cincinnati.
Angels starter Jose Soriano (0-2) whiffed six without a walk and allowed five hits and one run during his 5 1/3-inning stint. Kyren Paris cracked a double while Nolan Schanuel and Arol Vera notched singles.
Mariners 9, Brewers 3
Leadoff man Victor Robles went 2-for-4 with four RBIs — highlighted by a three-run homer in the sixth inning — as Seattle handled visiting Milwaukee in Peoria, Ariz.
The Brewers broke to a 3-0 lead in the first as Isaac Collins slugged a three-run homer off Mariners starter Bryan Woo (1-0), who settled down to earn the win. Woo allowed five hits and one walk while striking out four and yielding just the three runs in five innings.
Cal Raleigh stroked a two-run homer in the third off Brewers starter Elvin Rodriguez (0-2), who surrendered six hits and four runs over 3 2/3 innings. Luke Raley, Randy Arozarena and Donovan Solano poked two hits apiece for Seattle.
Nationals 4, Astros 3
Keibert Ruiz went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and drove in the go-ahead run with a fifth-inning sacrifice fly as visiting Washington held off Houston in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Nationals starter Trevor Williams (2-0) fanned six over five innings while allowing six hits and three runs (two earned). Alex Call went 3-for-3 to push his spring training average to .393.
Lance McCullers Jr. made his spring debut and threw 13 pitches across a hitless inning as the Astros’ starter. Spencer Arrighetti (0-1) took over and gave up four hits and four runs (two earned) over 3 1/3 innings. Jose Altuve went 1-for-3 but also committed an error on Ruiz’s sacrifice fly in left field, allowing an additional run to score.
Orioles 8, Blue Jays 2
Ryan Mountcastle drove in four runs with a pair of homers as host Baltimore cruised past Toronto in Sarasota, Fla.
Mountcastle slugged his fourth and fifth homers of the spring to aid Orioles starter Cade Povich (2-1), who fired five no-hit innings while striking out six and walking three. Ryan O’Hearn and Cedric Mullins belted their first homers of the spring.
Blue Jays starter Eric Lauer (0-1) was tagged for three homers and five runs during his three-inning effort. Bo Bichette poked a sixth-inning homer that served as Toronto’s lone extra-base hit.
Rangers 7, Guardians 3
Adolis Garcia’s three-run double in the first inning sparked Texas to a victory over visiting Cleveland in Surprise, Ariz.
The Rangers also got RBI extra-base hits from Wyatt Langford (triple), Joc Pederson (double) and Kevin Pillar (two-run homer). Starter Tyler Mahle (3-1) struck out six while throwing five innings of two-run ball.
Austin Hedges, Tyler Freeman and Juan Brito hit solo homers for the Guardians. Luis Ortiz walked six and yielded four runs in four-plus innings.
Giants (ss) 4, Padres 3
Robbie Ray allowed just an unearned run across five innings as a San Francisco split squad edged visiting San Diego in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Ray (2-0) gave up two hits and no walks while striking out two. Patrick Bailey went 3-for-3 with an RBI single while Mike Yastrzemski and Willy Adames collected two hits apiece for the Giants.
Padres starter Stephen Kolek (0-1) permitted one run on seven hits and a walk while striking out three in 3 1/3 innings. Eguy Rosario notched an RBI double and Oscar Gonzalez and Brandon Lockridge each had two hits for San Diego.
Rockies 3, Giants (ss) 1
Hunter Goodman doubled, tripled, drove in a run and scored one as host Colorado beat a San Francisco split squad in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Rockies starter Chase Dollander fanned seven while tossing 3 2/3 scoreless innings. He gave up two hits and two walks.
Tyler Fitzgerald produced two of the Giants’ six hits. San Francisco relievers Joey Lucchesi, Randy Rodriguez and Tyler Myrick each threw two shutout innings.
