The Baltimore Orioles jumped out to an eight-run lead after two innings and held off the visiting Tampa Bay Rays 12-8 in spring training action on Tuesday in Sarasota, Fla.
Jordan Westburg capped Baltimore’s five-run first with a three-run homer. Adley Rutschman went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Ramon Urias and Daniel Johnson both went deep as part of a 15-hit attack. Starter Tyler Wells (2-0) gave up one run over four innings.
Taj Bradley was slated to start for Tampa Bay but felt tightness in his chest muscle and was sent for an MRI. Erasmo Ramirez (0-2) started and gave up eight runs on eight hits in three innings. Rob Brantly homered twice and Randy Arozarena hit his first spring dinger for the Rays.
Cardinals 8, Red Sox 6
Alec Burleson and Ivan Herrera went deep and drove in two runs apiece as visiting St. Louis roughed up Boston starter Brayan Bello in Fort Myers, Fla.
Fresh off signing a six-year, $55 million deal last week, Bello (0-1) was charged with four runs on six hits over three innings. Trevor Story hit his first homer of the spring and went 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Ceddanne Rafaela also homered for the Red Sox.
Cardinals starter Matthew Liberatore (2-0) had a rough outing, giving up five runs on seven hits in four innings, but struck out five and picked up the win.
Blue Jays 8, Yankees 1
Justin Tuner went 3-for-3 with two RBIs as Toronto collected 12 hits and cruised over visiting New York in Dunedin, Fla.
Santiago Espinal and Daulton Varsho each added two RBIs to back starter Jose Berrios (1-0), who tossed 3 1/3 innings of one-run ball.
Jose Rojas went 2-for-3 with an RBI single for the Yankees. Reliever Duane Underwood Jr. (0-1) was saddled with the loss, yielding two runs (one earned) on three hits in 1 1/3 innings.
Astros 9, Marlins 1
Sparked by a six-run outburst in the fourth inning, Houston rolled to victory over host Miami in Jupiter, Fla.
In the fourth, Grae Kessinger and Yordan Alvarez delivered two-run hits, while Jose Altuve and Alex Bregman notched RBIs. Starter Hunter Brown (2-0) gave up five hits in 3 2/3 innings but struck out four and allowed only an unearned run.
Marlins starter Jesus Luzardo (0-2) had a tough outing, giving up three runs on five hits over 3 1/3 innings with four strikeouts.
Pirates 5, Braves 1
Oneil Cruz led off the bottom of the first inning with his fourth spring homer, sparking host Pittsburgh to a win over Atlanta in Bradenton, Fla.
Billy McKinney capped the Pirates’ four-run sixth with a three-run shot after Jack Suwinski went deep earlier in the inning. Six pitchers limited the Braves to just two hits, with Josh Fleming (1-0) picking up the win after two scoreless innings of relief.
Joe Jimenez (0-1) took the loss for the Braves, though he gave up just one run in 1 1/3 innings. Jarred Kelenic had Atlanta’s lone RBI and stole a base.
Tigers 1, Twins 0
In a pitchers’ duel, Detroit’s Kenta Maeda tossed four scoreless innings in a win over visiting Minnesota in Lakeland, Fla.
Maeda (1-1) gave up just one hit, walked two and struck out seven, outdueling the Twins’ Joe Ryan (1-1), who allowed the game’s only run over his four innings. Ryan yielded three hits and struck out six with no walks.
Javier Baez’s second-inning sacrifice fly plated Kerry Carpenter, who had tripled to lead off the inning.
Nationals 4, Mets 1
Trey Lipscomb hit a two-run triple and host Washington beat New York in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Nationals starter Mackenzie Gore went 5 2/3 innings and yielded one run on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Joe La Sorsa (1-0) finished the sixth inning with a strikeout for the win.
Starling Marte drew a bases-loaded walk for the Mets’ only run. Reliever Joey Lucchesi (0-1) was dinged for four runs on four hits and a walk in 1 1/3 frames.
Guardians 3, Rangers 0
Chase DeLauter hit a two-run home run, Shane Bieber pitched four strong innings and Cleveland blanked host Texas in Surprise, Ariz.
Bieber gave up two hits and a walk with four strikeouts before Scott Barlow (1-0) struck out two in a perfect fifth. Alexfri Planez added an RBI double for the Guardians.
The Rangers were limited to five hits with 12 strikeouts. Danny Duffy (0-1) was responsible for DeLauter’s homer in the sixth inning after starter Andrew Heaney tossed five scoreless innings.
Athletics 4, Mariners 2
Zack Gelof hit a go-ahead two-run homer as Oakland got past visiting Seattle in Mesa, Ariz.
Gelof finished with two hits and Miguel Andujar drove in a run for the Athletics. Dany Jimenez (1-1) got the win for two-thirds of an inning of relief.
Brian Anderson had a solo shot and Dylan Moore added an RBI single to put the Mariners ahead in the fifth before Gelof’s homer off reliever Kirby Snead (0-2).
Dodgers 6, Giants 4
Shohei Ohtani hit his second home run of the spring and fellow Los Angeles newcomer Tyler Glasnow threw 5 1/3 scoreless, hitless innings to beat visiting San Francisco in Phoenix.
Glasnow (1-0) fanned eight batters with just one walk. Ohtani’s two-run bomb in the sixth followed Will Smith and Teoscar Hernandez belting matching two-run homers in the fifth off Cody Stashak (0-1).
The Giants scored four runs in the ninth, featuring a bases-clearing double by Otto Lopez, but the rally was in vain.
Diamondbacks 2, Padres 2
Jake McCarthy hit a two-run triple to help Arizona tie host San Diego in Peoria, Ariz.
McCarthy, who finished with two hits, drove in Blaze Alexander and Tucker Barnhart in the fifth inning. The Padres’ Jackson Merrill had launched a two-run homer out of the nine hole for the Padres.
Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen allowed two runs on five hits and a walk in 2 2/3 innings. Padres starter Drew Thorpe pitched four innings of scoreless, one-hit ball with two walks and a strikeout.
Rockies 4, Royals 2
Coco Montes’ two-run homer from the nine hole in the second inning was enough for host Colorado to beat Kansas City in Scottsdale, Ariz.
All of the scoring was complete after two innings. Maikel Garcia hit a two-run homer in the first for the Royals, but Elias Diaz’s single and Kansas City’s fielding error brought in two runs in the bottom half.
Rockies starter Cal Quantrill (1-0) lasted four innings with two runs, seven hits and a walk. Royals starter Cole Ragans (0-1) yielded four runs on six hits and a walk with two strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings.
White Sox 14, Reds 1
Luis Robert Jr. hit two of Chicago’s five home runs in a rout of Cincinnati at Goodyear, Ariz.
Mike Moustakas, Martin Maldonado and Lenyn Sosa also went deep for the White Sox, who got four hits from Andrew Benintendi. Dylan Cease (1-0) tossed 3 1/3 innings of one-run ball, striking out eight.
The Reds’ lone run came on a homer from Jonathan India. Graham Ashcraft (1-1) was tagged for five runs and seven hits in four innings.
Cubs 6, Brewers 5
Patrick Wisdom led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo homer, lifting Chicago to a walk-off victory over visiting Milwaukee in Mesa, Ariz.
Wisdom sent the second pitch from James Meeker (0-1) out to left for the game-winner. Cubs starter Justin Steele struck out nine while allowing two runs in four-plus innings.
The Brewers got four no-hit innings from Colin Rea, who walked one and fanned seven. William Contreras went 3-for-4 with a homer, a double and four RBIs.
