Austin Riley and Matt Olson hit back-to-back home runs off Marcus Stroman and the host Atlanta Braves blasted the New York Yankees 11-1 in spring training action on Sunday in North Port, Fla.
Riley later had an RBI double off Stroman (1-1), who was making his second start of the spring since declaring he would not come out of the Yankees’ bullpen this season. Stroman gave up four runs on four hits in 2 2/3 innings.
The Braves continued their 12-hit assault on the Yankees’ relievers, with Jarred Kelenic and Charles Leblanc (three-run HR) going deep in the seventh and David McCabe adding a two-run single in the ninth. Starter Reynaldo Lopez (1-0) went 1 2/3 scoreless innings with a hit and two walks.
Everson Pereira had two of the Yankees’ seven hits. The lone run came across on Pablo Reyes’ sacrifice fly.
Phillies 5, Orioles 4
Matt Kroon hit the walk-off, two-run single to left and Philadelphia’s split squad defeated visiting Baltimore in Clearwater, Fla.
Kroon’s hit scored Payton Henry and Bryan Rincon, who walked and singled before Paul McIntosh was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Alec Bohm went 2-for-3 with a pair of solo homers for the Phillies.
The Orioles went ahead 4-3 with a two-inning seventh that featured an RBI single by Livan Soto. Christian Herberholz (0-1) blew the save, making a winner out of Philadelphia’s Nabil Crismatt (1-0).
Blue Jays 5, Phillies 4
Daulton Varsho, Bo Bichette and Steward Berroa each hit solo shots as Toronto got by visiting Philadelphia in Dunedin, Fla.
Max Scherzer made a 3 2/3-inning start and struck out four with one run on one hit. The Blue Jays later went ahead for good with a two-run seventh, thanks to a wild pitch and bases-loaded walk issued by the Phillies’ Griff McGarry (0-1). Toronto reliever Alex Amalfi (1-0) worked around a hit and a walk in the seventh, fanning two.
Kody Clemens (solo) and Gabriel Rincones (two-run HR) hit home runs for the Phillies.
Tigers 10, Pirates 4
Jahmai Jones and Thayron Liranzo hit three-run shots to propel visiting Detroit past Pittsburgh in Bradenton, Fla.
Trey Sweeney also homered for the Tigers, who scored four in the fourth and five in the seventh. Jackson Jobe (1-0) limited the Pirates to one run on two hits and struck out three in a three-inning start.
Henry Davis homered off Jobe and Darick Hall and Endy Rodriguez also went deep for the Pirates. Reliever Tim Mayza (1-1) gave up three runs on two hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning.
Red Sox 6, Mets 4
Masataka Yoshida racked up three RBIs on a ground-rule double and a single to lead Boston past visiting New York in Fort Myers, Fla.
Newcomer Alex Bregman went 2-for-3 with an RBI single for the Red Sox, and fellow newcomer Walker Buehler (1-0) struck out four and yielded one hit in a two-inning start.
Jose Siri hit a three-run shot for the Mets in the third before Yoshida answered with his RBI single later that inning. Paul Blackburn (0-1) was tagged for four runs on three hits and two walks in 1 1/3 frames.
Rays 5, Twins 5
Luke Keaschall hit a run-scoring groundout in the ninth inning before Mickey Gasper plated the tying run on a two-out single as Minnesota drew with visiting Tampa Bay in Fort Myers.
Byron Buxton and Trevor Larnach launched solo home runs for the Twins, who out-hit the Rays 10-9.
Junior Caminero hit two-run home runs off Twins starter Chris Paddack in the first and third innings to stake the Rays to a 4-0 lead. Rays starter Shane Baz threw three scoreless innings, scattering two hits, a walk and two Ks.
Nationals 4, Astros 3
Paul DeJong had a two-run home run in the third that proved to be the game-winner as Washington defeated host Houston in Palm Beach, Fla.
DeJong’s homer made it 4-1 after the Nationals scored on an error and Alex Call’s base hit in a two-run first. Starter Trevor Williams (1-0) scattered five hits and a walk in 2 1/3 innings, limiting the Astros to one run and striking out two.
Jake Meyers had a pair of RBI singles for the Astros. Starter Ronel Blanco (0-1) was saddled with two unearned runs on three hits and a walk in two innings. He struck out four.
Marlins 5, Cardinals 3
Jared Serna went 2-for-2 with two runs, including a solo homer, and host Miami edged past St. Louis in Jupiter, Fla.
Edward Cabrera was the first of eight Marlins pitchers and allowed one run on two hits in two innings. The seven relievers limited the Cardinals to just one more hit, with George Soriano (1-0) picking up the win.
Luken Baker brought the Cardinals within a run with a two-run shot in the seventh before Fenwick Trimble’s insurance run on an infield single boosted Miami. John King (0-1) was reached for three runs on five hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning in the fifth.
Giants 9, Angels 5
Jerar Encarnacion hit a bases-loaded double and a two-run single in driving in five runs as host San Francisco downed Los Angeles in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Giants starter Robbie Ray (1-0) was stellar in three scoreless innings with one hit, no walks and six strikeouts. Eight San Francisco pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts while walking two and yielding 11 hits and five runs.
Encarnacion and Jung Hoo Lee had two hits apiece. Angels starter Jose Soriano (0-1) was touched up for two hits, three runs and one walk with three strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings. Logan O’Hoppe, Jorge Soler and Christian Moore each had two hits for Los Angeles.
Rangers 6, Diamondbacks 3
Texas slammed four home runs in support of starter Jon Gray, who improved to 2-0 this spring in the win over visiting Arizona in Surprise, Ariz.
Corey Seager, Chad Wallach, Jake Burger and Josh Jung homered for Texas, which totaled seven hits. Gray scattered four hits across three scoreless innings with no walks and two strikeouts. Emiliano Teodo struck out two and allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth for his first save of the spring.
Eduardo Rodriguez started for the Diamondbacks and pitched two shutout innings. He was relieved by Blake Walston (0-1), who was roughed up for four runs and three hits — including two homers — over two innings. Ryan Thompson followed and allowed two more homers in the fifth.
Dodgers 6, White Sox 3
Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernandez homered as a Los Angeles split squad doubled up Chicago in Phoenix.
Freeman notched his second homer of the spring, and Hernandez his first. Shohei Ohtani went 1-for-2 with a single and a strikeout, and he is 2-for-5 in his first two games.
Ten Los Angeles pitchers limited Chicago to five hits with six walks and 12 strikeouts, with Sean Linan (1-0) pitching one-third of an inning with a strikeout to earn the decision. Nick Maton homered for the White Sox, while James Karinchak (0-1) yielded one run, two hits and two walks in one inning of relief.
Reds 7, Cubs 3
Jake Fraley and Blake Dunn each homered and had two of Cincinnati’s 14 hits in defeating host Chicago in Mesa, Ariz.
Will Benson had a solo shot in the ninth inning for the Reds, who never trailed. Fraley slammed a solo homer in the fourth and an RBI single in the sixth.
Reds starter Carson Spiers (1-0) worked three innings, allowing one run on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Cubs starter Matthew Boyd (0-1) was roughed up for three runs on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings.
Dodgers 8, Athletics 4
David Bote was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs as a Los Angeles split squad defeated the host Athletics in Mesa, Ariz.
Alex Freeland also homered and James Outman tripled for the Dodgers, who had 12 hits. Starter Justin Wrobleski (1-0) pitched three perfect innings with two strikeouts.
Athletics starter JP Sears (0-1) yielded two runs on three hits and two walks with one strikeout in three innings. Miguel Andujar had two of the Athletics’ five hits, including a homer.
Brewers 12, Guardians 12
Cleveland scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, with home runs from Jorge Burgos and Milan Tolentino, to forge a tie with visiting Milwaukee in Goodyear, Ariz.
The Brewers had gone up 12-8 on Isaac Collins’ RBI single in the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the inning, Garrett Stallings walked Kody Huff before he allowed back-to-back homers to Burgos and Tolentino. After a strikeout and infield single, Stallings was replaced by Josh Maciejewski, who coaxed a groundout before Micah Pries delivered a two-out single for the tying run. Will Wilson struck out to end the game.
Burgos also homered in the seventh inning and finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs. Raynel Delgado (2-for-2, two RBIs) and Sal Frelick (3-for-3, three RBIs, three runs) homered for Milwaukee as the teams combined for 28 hits.
Royals 10, Padres 4
Kansas City scored nine runs in the first three innings, helping starter Seth Lugo (2-0) to the victory despite being touched up against host San Diego in Peoria, Ariz.
Lugo allowed three runs on five hits and one walk with two strikeouts. He gave up a two-run homer to Jackson Merrill (2-for-2) in the first inning. The Royals’ five relievers combined for one run and three hits allowed with four strikeouts in six innings.
Freddy Fermin was 3-for-4 with four RBIs for Kansas City, and Harold Castro contributed a two-run homer. Padres starter Randy Vasquez (0-1) was roughed up for six runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk with one strikeout in two innings.
Rockies 6, Mariners 1
Host Colorado scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat Seattle in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Mariners reliever Hagen Danner (0-1) gave up three consecutive singles to load the bases. Then Adael Amador walked to force in a run, Yanquiel Fernandez reached on an infield single, Kyle Karros delivered a two-run double and Owen Miller hit a sacrifice fly.
Colorado’s Juan Mejia entered in the ninth and walked the first batter he faced, but he coaxed a double-play grounder and another groundout to end the game. Evan Justice (2-0) pitched a perfect eighth with two strikeouts for the win.
