Five Atlanta pitchers scattered four hits and designated hitter Marcell Ozuna provided power with a two-run home run as the host Braves shut out the Philadelphia Phillies 7-0 on Thursday in spring training action in North Port, Fla.
Raisel Iglesias (1-0) earned the win with a perfect fourth inning, then Zach Thompson allowed two hits while fanning three in the final five innings to collect his first save of the spring. Starter Hector Neris, Daysbel Hernandez (four strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings) and Aaron Bummer combined to work the first three innings.
Ozuna knocked his third homer of the spring with the fifth-inning shot, and teammate Chadwick Tromp drove in three runs on a groundout in the fourth and a single in the fifth. Michael Harris II was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run as the Braves totaled 11 hits.
Phillies starter Nabil Crismatt (1-1) took the loss after yielding one run and three hits in three innings. Cal Stevenson and Johan Rojas hit doubles.
Blue Jays 4, Rays 1
New acquisition Anthony Santander went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and one run as host Toronto downed Tampa Bay in Dunedin, Fla.
Santander, an All-Star outfielder last season for the Baltimore Orioles, signed with the Blue Jays for five years for a contract reported to be worth more than $90 million. He hit an RBI single in the first and a two-run double in the fifth.
Toronto starter Bowden Francis (1-1) allowed one run, three hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings for the win. Tampa Bay starter Taj Bradley (0-1) was roughed up for four runs (three earned), nine hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Jonathan Aranda homered for the Rays’ run.
Astros 11, Marlins 0
Eight Houston pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts and just three walks and five hits in shutting out host Miami in Jupiter, Fla.
Zach Dezenzo was 3-for-4 with an RBI double, Jake Meyers hit a 409-foot two-run homer and Zack Short slammed a 430-foot two-run blast and an RBI double for the Astros. Josh Hader (1-0) went 1 1/3 innings in earning the victory.
Marlins starter Janson Junk (0-1) yielded one run, one hit and two walks with three strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings in taking the loss. Griffin Conine and Jack Winkler doubled among Miami’s five hits.
White Sox 2, Angels 1
Chicago held Los Angeles to five hits as starter Martin Perez (2-1) went four scoreless innings to earn the win in Phoenix.
Perez collected five strikeouts, walked one and surrendered just two hits. Six White Sox pitchers worked relief, combining to surrender one run on three hits.
Andrew Vaughn’s two-run third-inning double was the difference in the game. The Angels halved the deficit on a Tim Anderson RBI single in the sixth.
Royals 11, Reds 8
Kansas City overcame a 7-2 deficit with a nine-run outburst in the eighth, then held on to defeat Cincinnati in Goodyear, Ariz.
Joey Wiemer finished 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs, Harold Castro added two RBIs on a double and a sacrifice fly and Hunter Renfroe and Peyton Wilson capped the Royals’ scoring with back-to-back RBI singles.
Elly De La Cruz homered and Blake Dunn homered and tripled for the Reds as the teams combined for 24 hits.
Diamondbacks 11, Athletics 3
Arizona outhit the A’s 17-7 and coasted to an easy win in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Ildemaro Vargas went 4-for-5 with four runs and an RBI while Pavin Smith collected four RBIs and a triple on 3-for-4 hitting. Zac Gallen (2-0) surrendered five hits and one run over 4 1/3 innings.
The Athletics’ Joey Estes (3-1) was shelled for eight runs on 11 hits in five innings. Luis Urias had an RBI single, while Seth Brown hit a run-scoring triple.
Twins 2, Red Sox 1
DaShawn Keirsey Jr. lofted a sacrifice fly to score Caden Kendle in the bottom of the eighth as Minnesota edged Boston in Fort Myers, Fla.
Twins starter Chris Paddack hurled 4 2/3 innings and racked up seven strikeouts while surrendering four hits and a run. Sean Newcomb also went 4 2/3 inning for the Red Sox, and he permitted one run, which was unearned, on four hits.
The teams had been deadlocked since the fifth, when Boston’s Kristian Campbell hit a sacrifice fly to score David Hamilton. The Twins took a 1-0 lead in the second when Harrison Bader scored on a throwing error.
Yankees 9, Orioles 7
Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a two-run double in the first inning and a three-run homer in the third, and New York held off Baltimore’s rally in Sarasota, Fla.
In the eighth, Omar Martinez knocked in a run with a double, then Brendan Jones plated two more with a single as New York went up 9-5. The Yankees also got a homer from Anthony Volpe.
Ryan O’Hearn and Adley Rutschman homered for Baltimore, which scored twice in the ninth before Jordany Ventura collected the save.
Mets 10, Nationals 3
Kodai Senga allowed no hits in 3 2/3 innings while striking out six as New York slammed Washington in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Senga (1-0) permitted a run, which was unearned, and walked two. Luis Torrens went 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs while Jose Siri finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs for the Mets.
Nationals starter Shinnosuke Ogasawara (1-3) surrendered eight hits and eight runs in 3 2/3 innings. CJ Abrams and Luis Garcia Jr. notched RBIs.
Rockies 7, Rangers (ss) 4
Sam Hilliard, Michael Toglia and Hunter Goodman hit two-run homers and Jordan Beck added a solo shot as Colorado beat a Texas split squad in Surprise, Ariz.
Goodman, Beck and Zac Veen each collected two hits for the Rockies. German Marquez (1-1) gave up three runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings.
The Rangers got homers from Joc Pederson, Corey Seager and Cody Thomas. Kumar Rocker fanned eight in 4 2/3 innings while yielding two runs on three hits.
Padres 5, Rangers (ss) 3
Nick Pivetta tossed five scoreless innings as San Diego downed a Texas split squad in Peoria, Ariz.
Pivetta (1-0) permitted just one hit and two walks while striking out five. Jason Heyward sparked the Padres’ offense by hitting a three-run triple and scoring on Elias Diaz’s second-inning single.
The Rangers were blanked until the ninth inning, when Cooper Johnson hit a two-run single and Thomas Specht added an RBI single. Adrian Houser (0-1) allowed four runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings.
