MLB: Royals use long ball to pound Tigers, 12-2

Four different players hit home runs to lift the Kansas City Royals to a 12-2 road win over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.

MJ Melendez went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs for Kansas City. Nick Pratto went 2-for-4 with a home run, Bobby Witt Jr. had a three-run home run, Kyle Isbel hit a grand slam and Nick Eaton went 4-for-5 with two RBIs to lead KC’s 15-hit attack.

The Royals evened up the three-game series at one apiece.

Jonathan Heasley (3-7) pitched seven innings to earn the win for the Royals, allowing two runs and eight hits.

The Royals opened the scoring in the first on a solo home run to left by Pratto.

Detroit answered in the second, tying the game after an RBI sacrifice fly by Ryan Kreidler.

Kansas City took a 4-1 lead in the third on a three-run home run to left by Witt, his 20th of the season.

The Royals made it 5-1 in the fourth on an RBI single by Melendez. They then blew the game open in the fifth, going up 9-1 following a grand slam home run by Isbel just inside the foul pole in right field.

Tucker Barnhart homered for Detroit in the bottom of the fifth to make it 9-2, but Melendez answered with a solo home run in the sixth to make it 10-2 Kansas City.

Eaton doubled home a pair of runs in the seventh inning to give the Royals a 12-2 lead.

Michael Pineda (2-7) took the loss for the Tigers, allowing five runs and six hits in four innings of work. He walked two and struck out three.

Detroit reliever Jason Foley came on in the fifth and lasted just 1/3 of an inning, allowing four runs on five hits.

Barnhart, Kreidler and Javier Baez each recorded two hits for Detroit.
