The Milwaukee Brewers acquired left-hander Andrew Chafin from the Arizona Diamondbacks prior to Tuesday’s trade deadline, according to published reports.

Arizona received right-hander Peter Strzelecki in the deal.

The Diamondbacks shored up their shaky bullpen by acquiring Paul Sewald from the Seattle Mariners on Monday. That move made Chafin expendable as he experienced some rough moments during the team’s closer-by-committee approach.

Chafin saved eight games but blew four other opportunities, including his last two chances. He gave up a two-out, two-strike homer to the New York Mets’ Francisco Alvarez and a go-ahead RBI triple to Mark Canha in the ninth inning of a 2-1 loss on July 5, and he allowed five runs in the ninth of a 10-6 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on July 24.

Chafin, 33, was 2-3 with a 4.19 ERA in 43 appearances this season.

Overall, Chafin is 16-23 with a 3.31 ERA and 19 saves in 519 appearances (three starts) over 10 seasons with the Diamondbacks (2014-20, 2023), Chicago Cubs (2020-21), Oakland Athletics (2021) and Detroit Tigers (2022).

Strzelecki, 28, is 3-5 with a 4.54 ERA in 36 relief appearances with the Brewers this season.

Strzelecki spent just more than a month at Triple-A Nashville before being recalled Sunday.

Overall, he had made 66 appearances with Milwaukee over the past two seasons and is 5-6 with one save and a 3.69 ERA.
