Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Johan Oviedo might need Tommy John surgery, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Monday.

Oviedo is “dealing with right elbow issues/pain,” the newspaper posted on social media. The recovery time from surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament runs from 12 to 18 months.

Oviedo, 25, is coming off his most productive season. He finished 9-14 with a 4.31 ERA in 32 starts, striking out 158 batters in 177 2/3 innings.

The Cuba native is 13-25 with a 4.32 ERA in 72 games (58 starts) with the St. Louis Cardinals (2020-22) and Pirates, who acquired him in an August 2022 trade with St. Louis.
