The Boston Red Sox placed veteran right-hander Chris Martin on the 15-day injured list with anxiety on Wednesday and activated outfielder Tyler O’Neill from the 10-day injured list.

Also, the Red Sox recalled right-hander Zack Kelly from Worcester and optioned catcher Tyler Heineman to the Triple-A club.

Martin, who last pitched Thursday, brought the issue to the club’s attention last weekend.

“Being respectful of the situation, he felt like it was manifesting in some physical ways that were keeping him from competing at the level that he’s used to in terms of fatigue and energy and recovery and sleep and some of those types of things,” Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow told reporters.

Martin, who turned 38 on Sunday, is 2-1 with a 4.22 ERA in 21 relief appearances this season, his second in Boston.

He’s 15-18 with a 3.42 ERA and 12 saves in 345 career relief appearances with seven teams.

O’Neill, 28, had been dealing with soreness in his knee. He batted .236 with 11 homers and 17 RBIs in 41 games this season.

Kelly, 29, is 0-1 with a 2.16 ERA in 11 relief appearances this season for the Red Sox.

Heineman, 32, went 0-for-1 in one game this season with Boston.
