The Detroit Tigers sent left-handed pitcher Andrew Chafin to the Texas Rangers on Tuesday ahead of the MLB trade deadline.

The Rangers sent right-handed pitching prospects Joseph Montalvo and Chase Lee to the Tigers in exchange for the veteran reliever.

Chafin, 34, joins the defending World Series champions as they attempt to make a playoff push. Despite entering the day three games below .500, the Rangers are just 3 1/2 games out of the American League West lead.

Chafin has pitched to a 3.16 ERA in 41 relief appearances for the Tigers this season, with a 3-2 record and one save in four opportunities. He has fanned 50 batters and walked 16 in 37 innings.

In an 11-year MLB career spanning five clubs, Chafin owns a 3.39 ERA a 20-26 record and 20 saves. He has 535 career strikeouts in 489 innings.

Montalvo, 22, is 4-2 with a 2.44 ERA in 13 starts at the High-A level this year. Lee, 25, has spent most of the past three years at Triple-A Round Rock and is 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA in 11 games (one start) between two levels this season.

The Rangers made room for Chafin on the 40-man roster by designating right-hander Jonathan Hernandez, 28, for assignment. He is 3-1 with a 5.05 ERA, 26 walks and 36 strikeouts in 41 innings over 26 games (one) start for Texas this season.
