The Pittsburgh Pirates recalled right-hander Quinn Priester from Triple-A Indianapolis to start Sunday’s finale of a three-game series against the host Toronto Blue Jays.

Priester, 23, will take the rotation spot of left-hander Martin Perez (left groin strain), who is on the injured list.

“We’re in a situation where we obviously need a starter with Martin on the IL,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said. “For Quinn, it’s just a matter of making sure that he keeps the ball on the plate and he stays in attack mode.”

Priester went 0-4 with a 4.33 ERA in five games (all starts) earlier this season with Pittsburgh. He allowed one hit over seven shutout innings with Indianapolis last Sunday against Triple-A Iowa.

Also Sunday, the Pirates placed infielder Alika Williams (right wrist sprain) on the 10-day injured list.

The move was retroactive to Thursday.

Williams, 25, is batting .210 with two RBIs and eight runs in 23 games this season.
