The Pittsburgh Pirates placed catcher Henry Davis on the 10-day injured list with left hand inflammation on Sunday and selected the contract of outfielder/first baseman Billy Cook from Triple-A Indianapolis.

The move involving Davis was made retroactive to Thursday.

Davis, 24, is batting .144 with one homer and five RBIs in 37 games this season. He is hitting .191 with eight homers and 29 RBIs in 99 career games with the Pirates.

Pittsburgh selected Davis with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft.

Cook, 25, is batting .275 with 17homers and 74 RBIs in 115 games at the Triple-A and Double-A levels.

“He’s just a player who seems to be coming into his game and improving. He’s just a baseball player,” Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said. “Really smart, heady, hard-working baseball player. He’s got a really good way about him. We’re excited that he will get an opportunity here, get a little bit of exposure to the major leagues.”

The Pirates acquired Cook on July 30 in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles for right-handed pitcher Patrick Reilly.
