The Pittsburgh Pirates placed left-hander Marco Gonzales on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a left forearm muscle strain.

The Pirates recalled right-hander Ryder Ryan from Triple-A Indianapolis to take the place of Gonzales, who has a 2.65 ERA without recording a decision in three starts this season, his first with Pittsburgh.

Pirates general manager Ben Cherington confirmed right-hander Paul Skenes is not an option to be called up at this time. Skenes was the No. 1 overall pick of the 2023 MLB Draft out of LSU.

“We don’t want to go from zero to 100 right away,” Cherington said. “Paul is so important to us long term, and we want to be thoughtful about that. We scheduled the early part of the season to try to make sure he’s hitting a total volume mark for 2024 that makes sense.”

Gonzales, 32, allowed two runs on six hits in six innings against the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday. He walked three batters and struck out five.

Gonzales is 65-49 with a 4.11 ERA in 166 career games (158 starts) with the St. Louis Cardinals, Seattle Mariners and Pirates.

Ryan, 28, is 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA in four relief appearances this season with Pittsburgh.
