Matt Vierling hit a game-winning three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth as the Detroit Tigers outslugged the visiting Toronto Blue Jays for a 14-11 victory on Sunday.
Vierling’s game-winner came off Jordan Romano (1-2) and extended Detroit’s winning streak to three games. Spencer Torkelson singled and Kerry Carpenter was intentionally walked to get to Vierling in the ninth.
Carson Kelly hit a three-run shot, while Torkelson also homered for the Tigers. Mark Canha had three hits, including a two-run single. Andy Ibanez and Javier Baez each drove in two runs.
Mason Englert (1-0) got the victory in relief.
Toronto’s Daulton Varsho hit a three-run homer to cap a five-run eighth. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had four hits and drove in a run for the Blue Jays. Cavan Biggio hit a two-run home run and Isiah Kiner-Falefa added a solo shot.
Orioles 4, White Sox 1
Kyle Bradish pitched seven no-hit innings and Adley Rutschman and Colton Cowser homered as visiting Baltimore defeated Chicago to secure a four-game sweep.
Bradish (1-0) spread out four walks while matching a career high with 11 strikeouts. He threw 63 of his 103 pitches for strikes, pacing the Orioles on a combined one-hitter.
Baltimore benefited from the long ball to send the White Sox to their ninth loss in 10 games. Danny Mendick drew Chicago within 3-1 with a pinch-hit home run against Danny Coulombe leading off the eighth, the hosts’ only hit of the game.
Guardians 5, Angels 4
Ben Lively threw seven strong innings and got just enough support from the bullpen to lead Cleveland to a victory over Los Angeles in Anaheim, Calif., completing a three-game sweep and extending the Guardians’ winning streak to nine games.
Lively (4-2), who has won each of his past three starts, gave up two runs on four hits and two walks, striking out five. The Guardians finished with just six hits, getting two apiece from Andres Gimenez and Johnathan Rodriguez.
The Angels made things interesting with two runs in the eighth inning to get within 5-4, but Cleveland closer Emmanuel Clase pitched a scoreless ninth for his 17th save. Matt Thaiss clubbed a two-run homer in the fifth for Los Angeles.
Reds 4, Dodgers 1
Jonathan India and Nick Martini drove in two runs apiece as Cincinnati completed a weekend sweep and handed visiting Los Angeles a season-high fifth straight loss.
Nick Martinez (2-3) followed Reds opener Brent Suter and allowed one hit over 4 1/3 innings for the win. Alexis Diaz relieved Carson Spiers with one out in the ninth and struck out Teoscar Hernandez and Andy Pages for his 10th save.
The Dodgers avoided the shutout with a run in the ninth inning. Shohei Ohtani reached on an infield single and moved to second on defensive indifference before scoring on Freddie Freeman’s one-out double against Spiers.
Red Sox 2, Brewers 1
Jarren Duran delivered a tiebreaking RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to help Boston avoid a three-game sweep with a victory over visiting Milwaukee.
After Ceddanne Rafaela led off the inning with a double, Duran singled against reliever Elvis Peguero (4-2) on the next pitch. Kenley Jansen pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his ninth save of the season. Justin Slaten (3-2) got the win by striking out the side in the eighth.
Gary Sanchez had a single and a double and was the only Milwaukee player with more than one hit. The Brewers struck out 12 times.
Mariners 9, Nationals 5
Julio Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs as Seattle defeated host Washington.
Ty France also went deep and singled home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning for the American League West-leading Mariners, who blew a 4-0 lead before rallying to snap a four-game skid.
Joey Gallo and CJ Abrams homered for the Nationals, who were trying to sweep the three-game interleague series. Both starting pitchers, Nationals left-hander Patrick Corbin and Mariners right-hander Bryan Woo, gave up three earned runs.
Braves 8, Pirates 1
Chris Sale was stellar through seven innings to help Atlanta avoid a three-game sweep with a win over host Pittsburgh.
Sale (8-1) allowed one run on four hits and struck out eight. He walked one. Jarred Kelenic, who entered the game in the bottom of the first after Ronald Acuna Jr. exited in the top half of the frame due to left knee soreness, went 3-for-4, scoring three runs for the Braves.
Pirates reliever Carmen Mlodzinski (0-2) allowed three runs on three hits in two innings. He came in for starter Martin Perez, who exited the game after three innings with a left groin injury. Perez allowed one run on four hits.
Mets 4, Giants 3
Omar Narvaez delivered a walk-off RBI single for New York, which stopped a five-game losing streak with a win over visiting San Francisco.
The Mets improved to 7-16 this month. The Giants lost for just the second time in their past 10 games.
Brett Wisely had two hits for the San Francisco, including a homer in the third. Matt Chapman doubled and scored on an error in the second and Heliot Ramos was 1-for-3 with a double and a sixth-inning RBI.
Rays 4, Royals 1
Brandon Lowe hit a three-run triple and Taj Bradley threw five scoreless innings as Tampa Bay beat Kansas City in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The Rays were held without a baserunner until the sixth because of Royals starter Michael Wacha, but Tampa Bay scored four runs in the inning to snap a six-game skid. Kansas City saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end.
The Royals loaded the bases in the top of the ninth against Pete Fairbanks, but Fairbanks retired Bobby Witt Jr. on a groundout for his fifth save of the year. Witt hit his ninth homer of the season in the sixth for Kansas City’s lone run.
Rangers 6, Twins 2
Corey Seager homered twice to help Texas end a six-game losing streak with a win over Minnesota in the finale of a three-game series in Minneapolis.
Nathaniel Lowe had two hits and two RBIs and Josh Smith and Leody Taveras each had two hits and a run for the Rangers, who had dropped 12 of their past 14.
Minnesota starter Pablo Lopez (4-5) had his second straight poor outing, allowing six runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. Carlos Correa had two hits and an RBI for the Twins, who had won four in a row.
Rockies 5, Phillies 2
Ryan McMahon homered, Brendan Rodgers had two hits and Colorado handed Philadelphia starter Ranger Suarez his first loss of the season with an afternoon victory in Denver.
The Rockies got to Suarez (9-1) in the first and second innings before he settled in. Suarez was charged with five runs (four earned) on three hits in six innings. He recorded nine strikeouts and a season-high four walks.
Rockies starter Cal Quantrill (4-3) allowed two runs on three hits in six innings. For the Phillies, Brandon Marsh had two hits and J.T. Realmuto singled in the eighth to extend his hitting streak to 15 games.
Astros 5, Athletics 2
Ronel Blanco returned from a 10-day suspension to pitch seven innings of one-run ball, Kyle Tucker capped a five-run fourth with a home run and Houston completed a series win over host Oakland.
Blanco (5-0) was pitching for a second consecutive time against the A’s, the first matchup on May 14 having ended prematurely when he was ejected for a sticky substance detected inside his glove during an inspection after three shutout innings. On Sunday, he limited Oakland to four hits, walked one and struck out six.
Max Schuemann homered off Blanco leading off the sixth and Shea Langeliers added a solo shot in the ninth for the Athletics.
Marlins 3, Diamondbacks 1
Ryan Weathers scattered four hits over six shutout innings and Jake Burger had a two-run single as Miami defeated Arizona in the rubber match of their three-game series in Phoenix.
Jesus Sanchez and Bryan De La Cruz each had two hits and a run and Jazz Chisholm Jr. added a double among two hits for the Marlins, who won their fourth consecutive series with their ninth win in the past 13 games.
Corbin Carroll tripled and scored a run for the Diamondbacks, who finished with a total of just 15 hits in the three-game set. Kevin Ginkel (2-1) suffered the loss, allowing three unearned runs on three hits in one inning of relief.
Padres 5, Yankees 2
San Diego scored four runs in the sixth inning to defeat visiting New York and avert a three-game sweep.
Jeremiah Estrada (2-0), who came on in relief of Padres starter Joe Musgrove with one out and a run home in the fifth, struck out all five batters he faced and came away with the win.
Alex Verdugo slugged a homer to lead off the ninth against San Diego closer Robert Suarez, who came on in the eighth and ended up recording his 15th save of the season. In five-plus innings, Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt (5-3) gave up three hits and was charged with two runs (one earned).
Cardinals 4, Cubs 3
Paul Goldschmidt homered twice and drove in four runs as St. Louis edged visiting Chicago for its season-best fifth straight win.
Ian Happ hit two homers and drove in three runs for Chicago, which has lost four straight and seven of its past nine.
The Cubs trailed 4-2 before Happ hit a leadoff homer in the ninth inning against Ryan Helsley, who recorded his 17th save, tied for the major league lead, after Seiya Suzuki flied out with runners on the corners.
