Seattle Mariners right-hander Gregory Santos will not be ready to start the season on time due to a lat strain, putting further strain on the team’s bullpen.

The Mariners also were expected to be without right-handed reliever Matt Brash when the season begins as he works his way through an elbow injury. Right-handed reliever Jackson Kowar (elbow) already has been ruled out for the season.

Santos’ injury is considered mild and the 24-year-old will look to add onto a breakthrough season in 2023 when he delivered a 3.39 ERA with five saves in 60 relief appearances for the Chicago White Sox.

Santos was acquired by Seattle in a trade with Chicago last month.
