MLB: Mariners acquire RHP Trent Thornton from Blue Jays

The Seattle Mariners acquired right-hander Trent Thornton in exchange for minor league infielder Mason McCoy on Wednesday.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Thornton, the Mariners transferred left-hander Marco Gonzales (left forearm strain) to 60-day injured list.

Thornton, 29, will be optioned to Triple-A Tacoma. He was 0-0 with a 1.69 ERA in 5 1/3 innings over four appearances this season for the Blue Jays.

Thornton was 5-1 with a 4.18 ERA with 18 walks and 26 strikeouts over 28 innings in 22 appearances this season at Triple-A Buffalo.

McCoy, 28, has started games at shortstop, second base and third base for Tacoma, where he batted .234 with 18 doubles, 11 home runs and 55 RBIs in 87 games.

Gonzales, 31, is 4-1 with a 5.22 ERA, 18 walks and 34 strikeouts in 50 innings over 10 starts this season for Seattle. He was placed on the 15-day IL on June 3 (retroactive to May 31).
