Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rowdy Tellez is expected to miss an additional four weeks following surgery on his left ring finger, manager Craig Counsell said Sunday.

Tellez was shagging fly balls in the outfield prior to Saturday’s game against the host Cincinnati Reds when his finger became stuck in the padding of the center-field wall at Great American Ball Park. Tellez tore his fingernail off and underwent surgery to insert 17 stitches to repair a fracture on the end of the digit.

“It was a freak accident,” Counsell said of Tellez, who was on track to return to action on Tuesday. “Wasn’t sprinting, wasn’t going at a high speed, believe me. I actually saw it. Looked like a very innocent thing. Probably means we won’t see him back with us for four weeks.”

Tellez, 28, is batting .213 with 12 homers and 36 RBIs in 79 games this season.

He is hitting .233 with 91 homers and 252 RBIs in 507 career games with the Toronto Blue Jays (2018-21) and Brewers.

Also on Sunday, the Brewers placed third baseman/outfielder Brian Anderson on the 10-day injured list with a low back strain.

The designation is retroactive to Thursday for Anderson, 30, who is batting .229 with nine homers and 38 RBIs in 85 games this season.

The Brewers recalled infielder Jahmai Jones from Triple-A Nashville to replace Anderson on the 26-man roster ahead of Sunday’s game at Cincinnati.

Jones, 25, appeared in four games for Milwaukee earlier this month and went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Jones signed with the Brewers on July 3, two days after being released by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
