Former Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel has been designated for assignment by the Brewers, potentially putting a quick end to his Milwaukee tenure.

On Sunday, the Brewers made the move, selecting the contract of Joel Kuhnel to take Keuchel’s place on the roster.

Milwaukee acquired Keuchel, 36, in a deal with the Seattle Mariners on June 25. Almost immediately he was thrown into starting detail, debuting in a 6-5 win against the Texas Rangers on June 26. That outing was rocky, however, as he allowed five earned runs on eight hits while striking out four in four innings.

He earned three more starts with his team winning two of the three, but he was unable to earn a decision in any of them. Overall, he had a 5.40 ERA with 11 strikeouts over 16 2/3 innings.

Those numbers were a far cry from his Cy Young days in Houston, when he earned that award and an All-Star berth in 2015 for the Astros while going 20-8 with a 2.48 ERA. He also had an All-Star trip in 2017 when the Astros won the World Series and was awarded five Gold Gloves (2014-16, ‘18 and in ‘21 with the Chicago White Sox).

Kuhnel, 29, had one previous appearance this season for Houston, where he surrendered four hits and four runs over two innings. He was since claimed for the 40-man rosters of both the Brewers and previously the Toronto Blue Jays after the Astros designated him for assignment. He has a 6.30 ERA over 85 2/3 innings in the majors.
