The Los Angeles Angels placed left fielder Taylor Ward on the 10-day injured list Sunday and transferred him to the 60-day list later in the day due to facial fractures he sustained after being hit by a pitch from Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah.

Ward had been taken to a Toronto hospital after he was struck by the pitch in the fifth inning of the Angels’ 6-1 loss to the Blue Jays on Saturday.

“That’s probably the worst feeling ever,” Manoah said. “Definitely want to pray for him and his family. That’s the last thing you want to do, no matter the situation, no matter the team, no matter anything. I feel really bad about it. I’ll definitely be looking to see how he’s doing.”

Ward, 29, is batting .253 with 14 home runs and 47 RBIs in 97 games this season. In six seasons, all with the Angels, he is a career .255 hitter with 52 home runs and 167 RBIs in 391 games.

Ward was transferred to the 60-day IL after the Angels acquired first baseman C.J. Cron and outfielder Randal Grichuk from the Colorado Rockies on Sunday night.

The Angels selected the contract of infielder Kevin Padlo earlier Sunday and then designated him for assignment after the trade.

Padlo, 27, is 1-for-8 with a double and a run in three games for the Angels this season.
