Alex Faedo pitched six scoreless innings and the Detroit Tigers salvaged the finale of a three-game series by posting a 3-1 win over the visiting San Diego Padres on Sunday afternoon.

Faedo (2-4) gave up just one hit, although he did issue four walks. Alex Lange closed out the win with a scoreless ninth inning for his 17th save of the season.

Spencer Torkelson and Andy Ibanez each hit a solo homer in support of Faedo. Kerry Carpenter supplied two hits and drove in the Tigers’ other run. Riley Greene had two hits and scored a run.

San Diego starter Joe Musgrove (9-3) gave up three runs and seven hits while losing for the first time since May 20. He had won his last eight decisions. Gary Sanchez drove in the Padres’ lone run.

After Musgrove struck out the first two batters he faced, Torkelson blasted a hanging slider over the left field wall for his 15th homer of the season.

Jake Cronenworth had a two-out double in the second inning but Faedo retired Sanchez on a grounder. A double play helped Faedo escape trouble in the third.

Ibanez hit the first pitch he saw in the third over the left field wall for his seventh homer of the season.

Detroit wasn’t done scoring in the inning, however. After Musgrove set down the next two batters, Greene hit a single and Torkelson walked. Carpenter then reached on a single to right as Greene scored to make it 3-0.

Faedo induced another double-play ball, this time from Fernando Tatis Jr., during the sixth inning. Musgrove also benefited from a double play in the bottom of the inning. With runners on the corners, Musgrove got Javier Baez to bounce into one to keep San Diego’s deficit at three runs.

With Beau Brieske on in relief in the seventh, Xander Bogaerts smacked a one-out double and scored on Sanchez’s two-out single.

Lange got the first two outs in the ninth before he walked Bogaerts. After Bogaerts advanced to second on defensive indifference, Cronenworth reached on shortstop Baez’s error as Bogaerts moved to third. Cronenworth moved to second on a wild pitch. Lange recovered to get Sanchez out on a short fly ball.
