The purse for this week’s 2022 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship has doubled to $9 million.
The season’s third major begins Thursday at Congressional Country Club in Washington, D.C., with 99 of the top 100 players on the LPGA Tour money list competing in the event.
The purse doubles the $4.5 million total from 2021, while the winner’s share also doubles to $1.35 million.
The purse was just $2.25 million in 2014, the year before the PGA of America began its collaboration with KPMG.
“When the PGA of America partnered with KPMG and the LPGA Tour in 2015, we promised to elevate this event by increasing the purse, conducting it at venues with a history of hosting men’s major championships such as Congressional Country Club, and delivering broadcast network coverage with NBC Sports,” PGA of America president Jim Richerson said in a news release Tuesday. “As part of our shared commitment to support and showcase women’s golf, we have delivered on those promises.”
Nelly Korda is the defending Women’s PGA champion. She captured her first major tournament victory last year at Atlanta Athletic Club, beating Lizette Salas by three strokes.
