Toronto Argonauts star quarterback Chad Kelly is recovering from surgery on his badly broken leg that will cause him to miss Sunday’s Grey Cup against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Kelly sustained fractures to the fibula and tibia during the third quarter of last Saturday’s 30-28 victory over the Montreal Alouettes. Kelly was injured when Montreal’s Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund landed on the leg.

Kelly initially tried to press the bones back in place while walking on the leg before it crumbled and he fell to the turf. He was taken off the field via stretcher.

The initial recovery period was tabbed at up to six months but will be updated after 12 weeks.

Kelly released a statement thanking people for their support.

“I couldn’t be prouder of our team for securing an outstanding win, and I’m thrilled we’re headed to the Grey Cup,” Kelly said. “While I regret not being able to play, I have full confidence in the team and staff to bring the cup home where it belongs. Thank you again for the incredible support — I’ll see you all soon!”

Nathan Arbuckle will start for Montreal against Winnipeg.

Kelly, 30, was the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player in 2023. He is the nephew of Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Kelly.

Kelly was on rosters of the Denver Broncos (2017-18) and Indianapolis Colts (2019-20) over four seasons but never threw an NFL pass. He appeared in just one game, that coming with the Broncos in 2018.
