On Wednesday, Major League Soccer announced the cancellation of all in-person activities for the 2022 eMLS League Series 1 and Series 2 events planned for the first quarter of 2022 and a move to strictly online competition in response to the latest wave of COVID-19.
Series 1, originally scheduled to take place Jan. 15-16 in Cincinnati, will now take place online, with eMLS players competing from their own homes.
“While we were thrilled to host this competition and showcase Cincinnati to the global gaming community, we agree with the decision made by MLS to host this event in an online/virtual format to ensure the safety of players, staff and fans alike,” said Meg Ryan, FC Cincinnati Chief Marketing Officer. “We hope to host this event in future years.”
Series 2, which was scheduled to take place in Chicago from Jan. 29-30, is in the same boat, now shifting to an online competition.
The MLS cited the safety of players, staff and fans in making the decision.
The eMLS Cup is tentatively scheduled for March 13 in Austin, Texas.
