Braugher died at 61 of a brief illness, his publicist said.
Known for his private and reserved demeanor off-screen, Braugher has maintained a level of privacy regarding his personal life. He is married to actress Ami Brabson, and they have three sons together.
Deadline was the outlet that broke the news of Braugher’s death and also stated that the actor was scheduled to appear in the next Netflix series, “The Residence.”
Braugher received eleven nominations for Primetime Emmy Awards, of which he won two, according to the Television Academy. Two Television Critics Association Awards were also given to him. For his roles in Homicide, The Tuskegee Airmen, Gideon’s Crossing, Thief, Men of a Certain Age, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the actor was nominated for eleven Emmys in all.
Braugher played Detective Frank Pembleton on NBC’s police drama Homicide: Life on the Street from 1993 to 1998. After receiving a 1996 nomination for an Emmy, he was awarded one in 1998 for his work on the program. Following the end of his tenure on the program, Braugher went on to appear regularly in several brief television programs, such as Men of a Certain Age, Hack, and Gideon’s Crossing. For his performance in the 2006 miniseries Thief, he was awarded another Emmy.
With the sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Braugher saw a late-career comeback as the show masterfully used his stern seriousness to great comic effect. Throughout the eight seasons of the show, Braugher’s multidimensional and austere Captain Holt appeared in 153 episodes, making him his longest-running character.
On stage, Braugher was a regular; he appeared in many of Shakespeare’s plays, including The Way of the World, The Whipping Man, Tell Them I’m Still Young, Othello, Macbeth, As You Like It, Measure for Measure, and Twelfth Night. In addition, he was a board member of the Classical Theatre of Harlem.
