Frenchman Richard Gasquet upset top-seeded Daniil Medvedev of Russia in straight sets, surviving a second-set tiebreaker in the process, in a round of 16 match at the Geneva Open in Geneva, Switzerland on Tuesday.

Gasquet, who is ranked 75th in the world, knocked off the second-ranked Medvedev, who is in the tourney as a wild card, 6-2, 7-6 (5).

He next will face Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak, who defeated Italian qualifier Marco Cecchinato 6-2, 6-3.

After Gasquet broke Medvedev on consecutive opportunities en route to winning the first set, and once again to start the second, Medvedev returned the favor to tie the second at 3-3.

The match stayed on serve into the tie-breaker, when the players broke each other’s serve twice in the first 10 points before Gasquet held serve and broke Medvedev to clinch the match.

A handful of matches from Tuesday were from the round of 32.

Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia, the tournament’s fifth seed, defeated Argentine qualifier Facundo Bagnis, who retired after losing the first set 6-4, and Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis beat Italy’s Fabio Fognini 6-4, 6-3.

Lyon Open

All three seeded players in action at the Lyon Open in Lyon, France, came away with wins on Tuesday, although two of them needed three hard-fought sets to survive.

Fourth-seeded Alex De Minaur of Australia rebounded from badly losing the first set to knock off Ugo Humbert of France 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Similarly tested was seventh-seeded Sebastian Baez of Argentina, who finally defeated German’s Oscar Otte 5-7, 6-4, 5-2 in 91 minutes.

The No. 1 seed, Cameron Norrie of Great Britain, defeated Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina 6-4, 6-4.
