Nick Kyrgios withdrew from the Terra Wortmann Open on Monday due to a lingering injury to his left knee.

The 28-year-old Australian reached the semifinals last year at the ATP 500 grass-court event in Halle, Germany.

Kyrgios, ranked No. 31 in the world, had surgery in January to repair a small tear in his left lateral meniscus.

He returned to the tour last week but fell in the first round to China’s Wu Yibing at the Boss Open in Stuttgart, Germany.

Kyrgios said he hopes to recover in time for Wimbledon, which begins on July 3. He lost in the finals there last year in four sets to Serbia’s Novak Djokovic.

“Very unfortunate news that I won’t be able to compete at Halle this year. Still dealing with a couple of things in my knee, just trying to give myself the best opportunity to compete at Wimbledon,” Kyrgios said in a video posted by the tournament. “As you all know, that tournament means a lot to me and I just want to do everything right by my body. I didn’t want to go out there and not give you the same performance I gave last year. So hopefully next year I’ll be healthy enough to play, see you soon.”

Kyrgios was replaced in the field at Halle by Aslan Karatsev of Russia.
