ATP: ATP roundup: Top seed Daniil Medvedev knocked out in Halle

No. 8 seed Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain eliminated top-seeded Daniil Medvedev of Russia 7-5, 7-6 (3) in the quarterfinals of the Terra Wortmann Open on Friday in Halle, Germany.

Medvedev held a 12-0 advantage in aces and saved five of seven break points, but Bautista Agut held off his higher-ranked opponent in the 12th game of the first set and won the final three points of the second-set tiebreaker.

Bautista Agut will face Russia’s Andrey Rublev in the semifinals. The third seed, Rublev had to rally for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor.

The other semifinal will pit No. 9 seed Alexander Zverev of Germany against Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik. Zverev beat Chile’s Nicolas Jarry 7-5, 6-3, while Bublik led his quarterfinal match 7-5, 2-0 when Italian fourth seed Jannik Sinner retired due to an adductor injury.

Cinch Championships

Sebastian Korda will get a shot at No. 1 seed Carlos Alcaraz of Spain in the semifinals after upsetting fifth seed Cameron Norrie of Great Britain 6-4, 7-6 (1) in the quarters in London.

The unseeded American won 33 of 39 first-service points (84.6 percent) and had a 7-3 edge in aces. Korda has one victory in three tries against Alcaraz, the current World No. 2.

Alcaraz advanced with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Bulgarian qualifier Grigor Dimitrov.

No. 2 seed Holger Rune of Denmark topped sixth seed Lorenzo Musetti of Italy 6-4, 7-5. In the semifinals, Rune will face No. 7 Alex de Minaur of Australia, who outlasted France’s Adrian Mannarino 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
