Seattle Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny will miss the rest of the season with a broken left fibula.

Coach Pete Carroll confirmed Monday that Penny will require surgery to repair damage to his fibula and tibia. Penny will have the surgery Tuesday morning, according to NFL Network.

Penny was injured in the third quarter of Sunday’s 39-32 loss at New Orleans and was carted to the locker room.

“It’s going to be a haul for him. This is what they refer to as a tib/fib incident. He broke his fibula and cracked that, but it’s the high-ankle sprain element of it that makes it difficult. And there’s a particular surgery that they do to connect and tighten down those bones,” Carroll said on Seattle Sports 710 AM.

“It’s going to take a number of months, so he’s going to miss the season. It’s really a heartbreaker for a kid that has really bounced back into the limelight of our program and for us and all, and for himself. He’s been through such a long haul that it’s really just a heartbreaking loss for him. He’d been doing great and everybody could see it and we’ve been so excited for him.”

Penny will undergo tight-rope surgery and have his fibula plated, and he faces a four-month recovery, per NFL Network.

Penny, 26, finished Sunday’s game with 54 yards on eight carries. He has rushed for 346 yards and two touchdowns in five games this season, his fifth with the Seahawks since being drafted in the first round in 2018 out of San Diego State.

Rookie Kenneth Walker III would ascend to the starting running back spot for Seattle. He has 146 yards rushing and a touchdown on 23 carries this season in a backup role. DeeJay Dallas is listed behind Walker on the depth chart.

The Seahawks claimed RB Tony Jones off waivers on Monday, one day after he was waived by the New Orleans Saints. He takes the roster spot of linebacker Darryl Johnson, who was placed on injured reserve last week.

Jones, 24, appeared in two games for the Saints this season. He has 163 career rushing yards in 14 games (five starts), all with the Saints. He joined the Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2020.
