The Minnesota Twins recalled right-hander Louie Varland from Triple-A St. Paul to start against the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Friday night.

Varland, 24, is 0-1 with a 5.23 ERA in two previous starts. He made his major league debut on Sept. 7.

He is 8-5 with a 3.06 ERA in 24 games (23 starts) between St. Paul and Double-A Wichita and was recently named the Twins’ top minor leaguer for 2022 by Baseball America.

The Twins designated right-hander Aaron Sanchez for assignment to make room for Varland on the 28-man roster.

Sanchez, 30, was 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA in seven games (three starts) since signing with Minnesota on June 6.

Sanchez was an All-Star with Toronto in 2016 and finished 15-2 with an American League-leading 3.00 ERA.

He owns a 38-38 career record with a 4.14 ERA in 173 games (113 starts) with the Blue Jays (2014-19), Houston Astros (2019), San Francisco Giants (2021), Washington Nationals (2022) and Twins.
